What you should (and shouldn't) bring to camp

Be prepared with warm clothing for the nights, and potentially inclement days. Onondaga’s cabins do not have heat and nighttime may potentially be cool. Pack your gear in something easy to carry, as you will have to walk to your cabin. Try to avoid using a suitcase. Knapsacks or hockey bags are best. Put your name on your things!!

BRING:
  • Socks and underwear for each day
  • 2 pairs of pants
  • 2 pairs of shorts (weather permitting)
  • 2-3 t-shirts

DON'T BRING:
  • Anything that requires batteries or electricity—including video games, cell phones, pagers, radios, CD players etc. (This does not include cameras and flashlights).

  • PLEASE ensure that all necessary medications are outlined on your school health form.

Frequently Asked Questions … and Answers

Q: What if my child has allergies or special dietary requirements?
A: Please let Mrs. Papp (school nurse) know these details so that the camp can meet all dietary requirements. If you have serious concerns, please call Mrs. Papp at Ridley College, 905-684-1889 ext. 2252 or e-mail at barbara_papp@ridleycollege.com

Q: What is the purpose of these outdoor experiences?
A: Experiential Education is based on the philosophy that we learn best by doing. By utilizing adventure activities, individuals are asked to put aside preconceived notions of their abilities and develop new competencies and confidences. These trips are valuable learning opportunities to teach life skills such as, communication, decision making, trust building, conflict resolution, team building and leadership. This trip is intended to help the boys connect with one another, have fun and empowering experiences and start their year off on an exciting note.

Q: Who is in charge? What is the staff: student ratio? What are the staff’s qualifications?
A: The Camp staff team consists of about ten outdoor education professionals that have extensive experience working with groups of all ages. All staff are fully qualified in First Aid and CPR. The Camp staff team is fun, enthusiastic, and fully committed to ensuring that each individual experiences success and positive self-growth. Twenty-five Ridley faculty will also assist with the programme at camp as well as provide overall supervision.

Q: Where is my child going to be while he/she is away?
A: See camp contact information above. PLEASE ONLY CALL IN THE CASE OF EMERGENCY.

Q: How far to the nearest hospital should an emergency arise?
A: From camp it’s approximately 10-15 minutes to the hospital.

Q: Does it matter what type of bag you pack in?
A: Ideally you will pack in something that is easy to carry. You will be walking from the bus to your cabin. (NO SUITCASES if you can avoid it!)

Q: Should you pack…Food? iPods, CD players? Cell phones?
A: NO! PLEASE DO NOT pack any of these items—they go missing!!!! You will have plenty of food. Food draws animals into the cabins. All electronic devices distract from the meaning of removing ourselves from our regular, busy lives.

Q: Are we outside rain or shine?
A: Yes. Regardless of the weather, you will be outside.

Q: Do you need a sleeping bag?
A: YES!! Boarders will have an opportunity to purchase a sleeping bag and flashlight prior to departing for camp.

Q: Are Ridley School rules in effect at camp?
A: YES!! All school rules are in effect throughout the duration of the camp experience.

Q: Will there be a charge for attending this camp?
A. Yes. Approximately $200.00 will be billed to the student account for this excursion.
